Pygmalion Roundup: Tennis, Lord Huron, Best Coast, Dirty Projectors (Review/Pictures)

The best weekend of the year in Champaign-Urbana wrapped up Saturday night, and left bands like Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors marveling at the line-up founder Seth Fein was able to produce. We were there for it all, traveling between Krannert Art Museum, Canopy Club, downtown Urbana outside of Black Dog, and downtown Champaign behind the High Dive. So without further ado, here’s the second part of the four part ACITM Pygmalion Roundup (the Pyggy crown will be the finale coming this Wednesday), highlighting Friday’s shows in downtown Urbana and Canopy.

Week that Was: Pygmalion Edition

This week’s “Week that Was” is a special Pygmalion edition, featuring only artists performing at the 3 day festival this weekend in Champaign-Urbana. Although Sleigh Bells withdrew from the lineup due to a Derek Miller injury, local CU heroes HUM step in for a rare performance for the opening night’s main event on Thursday, September 27th at the Canopy Club. Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors, Best Coast, and Dinosaur Jr. are still scheduled to perform along with many, many more. The festival should be a blast, and tickets are still available here!

The post doubles as our top picks, so enjoy and let us know what you think!

Pygmalion Music Festival: An Interview With Founder Seth Fein

Although writing about the final festival of the summer season brings me down a bit, just looking at the Pygmalion 2012 lineup makes it all better. Festival founder Seth Fein has jam packed the 3 day festival with the big name likes of Grizzly Bear, Dinosaur Jr, Dirty Projectors, Sleigh Bells, and Best Coast, along with local acts Common Loon, Elsinore, and Santah. 54 bands will make their way to the Champaign-Urbana area overall, and you can catch all of them for the price of $100. To buy a festival pass, click here.

The great man that brings all of this to the generally quiet (maybe not quiet anymore) college town is Seth Fein. The Smile Politely founder (Champaign-Urbana’s independent online magazine) and Nicodemus Agency owner is a very busy man, as the titles show. Luckily he answered a couple questions for ACITM, which should help you learn more about the festival and CU’s musical savior himself. Check it out after the jump!

Pygmalion Music Festival 2011 Champions

What a wonderful, exhausting, awesome 5 days. It was my first of I hope many Pygmalion Festivals, and I was treated to a great lineup, enthusiastic crowds, weird hipster dancing, and a photo pass (pictures are here if you don’t want to read show reviews). Texas’s own, Explosions in the Sky, headlined the first night, with the rest of the festival boasting acts such as Cut Copy, Toro y Moi, Washed Out, MiMOSA, and the Hood Internet among others.

Who would win the 2011 Piggy Crown?

Somewhere the "Lollie" Award winners are wishing they could be involved in this contest

Top 10 Acts to See at Pygmalion

If you’re a U of I student tired of totes ragin’ every night at the krazy keggers at Sigma Delta Zeta Phi Omega Zeta Beta Kayta and want to see good music for 5 days (instead of hearing Bruno Mars and New Boyz at the ∑∆πΩZßK house), this festival is for you. If you’re a Chicago resident still really upset that Pitchfork/Lollapalooza/North Coast had to end, and just a little more music would make you feel better, this festival is also for you. Pygmalion Music Festival can be seen as summer’s last stand, or fall’s bright start. The festival that takes place September 21-25 offers 90 bands playing at 10 different locations throughout the Champaign-Urbana area.

As we did with Lollapalooza, picking the shows you could not miss and basically crafting your schedule for you (It’s ok to admit it), here are the top 10 acts to see at Pygmalion.
