Lollapalooza: What to do outside of Grant Park

Lollapalooza is all about the weekend as a whole, not just Grant Park part. Sure, 138 artists and groups on 7 stages will take over Grant Park August 2nd-4th, providing over 30 hours of music to over 300,000 people, but the fun doesn’t stop there. All weekend (starting Thursday August 1st), we have events picked out for you to make the best out of the experience. Why not spend Lolla like the VIP you see in the mirror?

Thursday

After an exclusive advanced screening of Focus Feature’s “The World’s End,” Filter Magazine  hosts a party to start a glorious and sure to be exhausting weekend at Logan Square Auditorium. Free drinks plus live sets by Smith Westerns and MNDR, the event starts at 9PM and is strictly 21+. Sponsored by PBR, do312, Fender, UBER, and more, be sure to give us a shout if you see us hanging out!

2013 Lolla Must Sees

My favorite post to write every year, and this year is no different. Many may be complaining that this year’s Grant Park lineup doesn’t compare to other major music festivals around the world, but those people aren’t looking hard enough. Last year I suggested catching Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, as they were destined for stardom (and boy has it hit hard, with a sold-out world tour approaching and 3 tracks in the Billboard Top 100), and Givers, who were up there for my favorite performance of 2012. So same drill… you will not find The Killers, Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, or even Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper on this list. While I still highly recommend checking out all of those acts, here are the lesser known artists you can’t miss.

Week that Was (2-6-13)

The Week that Was has been MIA for a couple of months, showing its head every once in a while. We’ve let our readers down. That’s why today marks the return… I’ve caught up on all the emails in the acityinthemidwest@gmail.com account (which you can submit music to at any time) and bring you a mega Week that Was. Think of it as a February gift. We’re back for good now. 20 tracks you need to check out. If you’d like any more information/would like to hear more of any of the artists featured, let us know and we’ll make it happen. Music is alive. Enjoy, tell your friends, and let us know what you think.

Angel Haze & Lunice “Gimme That”

Fresh from her first ever London performance, Angel Haze and Luckyme producer Lunice – who just finished a gig at the Warehouse Project with Hudson Mohawke as TNGHT – met for the first time at Metropolis Studios, where they worked into the night creating a new song, from scratch. “Gimme That” is the latest in adidas originals and yours truly’s “Songs from Scratch” series that also includes Danny Brown & Araabmuzik’s “Molly Ringwlad,” and Joey Bada$$’ “Daily Routine.”

Angel Haze “Cleaning Out My Closet” [Download]

Angel Haze takes on an Em classic, taken from her upcoming mixtape Classick, out Oct. 25. Not many artists put themselves out there like this; a really deep song that made me respect her even more. Check it out.

Week that Was (10-11-12 to 10-17-12)

If you’re like me, fall weather means long walks with no destination to take in the great outdoors while it’s not 80 below yet. And if you’re like me, you do this with good music coming in through your headphones. Here’s the “Week that Was,” with a badass track from Angel Haze. Enjoy, repost, let us know what we missed!
