Week that Was (4-16-14)

This should probably be called the year that was, but to help with tagging, we’re sticking with “Week.” Away for some time, but getting back on track, expect more and more ACITM music coverage as I finish my studies and head back to what has become the mecca of music, Chicago. We’ve got an old favorite in The Ataris coming to town Friday night, with an Orwells homecoming in April.

Without further ado, let’s get to the music. Starting us off are Sunny Gicz and Gabe Niles, aka Sunny & Gabe, a Virginia duo that varies from a hazy overcast to a strong trip hop pounding bass. They’ve got a mixtape called “Free Candy” that’s available for download now. Expect new music soon from these two.

Pygmalion 2013 Round Up: Daughter, Head and the Heart

My fourth and final Pygmalion as a student is officially over and what a way to go out. The Krannert Center opened the festivities, with one of the UK’s most talked about groups, Daughter, kicking it off. They were joined by Head and the Heart, the Pacific-Northwest folk-rockers touring in support of their upcoming release Let’s Be Still. Check out pictures and reviews below. Stay tuned for the annual Pyggy Crown tomorrow!

This weekend Hebru Brantley showcased his work, and foray into merchandise, at 902 S. Wabash Ave. It was a great addition to Lolla weekend, and luckily ACITM found some time to stop by.

2013 Lolla Must Sees

My favorite post to write every year, and this year is no different. Many may be complaining that this year’s Grant Park lineup doesn’t compare to other major music festivals around the world, but those people aren’t looking hard enough. Last year I suggested catching Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, as they were destined for stardom (and boy has it hit hard, with a sold-out world tour approaching and 3 tracks in the Billboard Top 100), and Givers, who were up there for my favorite performance of 2012. So same drill… you will not find The Killers, Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, or even Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper on this list. While I still highly recommend checking out all of those acts, here are the lesser known artists you can’t miss.

Chance the Rapper @ the Metro [Review + Videos]

393 – DAMN -days in between Chance the Rapper’s 10Day mixtape and this year’s masterpiece Acid Rap. All that happened in between were sold out Metro shows, studio sessions with the RZA and Skrillex, profiles from Pitchfork, Vibe, Complex, a XXL Freshman nomination, a spot at Lolla 2013, and more. The Chathum, Illinois native celebrated his rise to the top of the Chicago rap, and music, scene this weekend with two sold out shows at the Metro.
