2013 Lolla Must Sees

My favorite post to write every year, and this year is no different. Many may be complaining that this year’s Grant Park lineup doesn’t compare to other major music festivals around the world, but those people aren’t looking hard enough. Last year I suggested catching Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, as they were destined for stardom (and boy has it hit hard, with a sold-out world tour approaching and 3 tracks in the Billboard Top 100), and Givers, who were up there for my favorite performance of 2012. So same drill… you will not find The Killers, Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, or even Kendrick Lamar and Chance the Rapper on this list. While I still highly recommend checking out all of those acts, here are the lesser known artists you can’t miss.

San Cisco @ The Grove Stage @ 1 PM

  1. Listen to “Awkward” (You can also download it for free)
  2. Frontman Jordi Davieson (second from the left) is looking for a fake ID. He’s the youngest in the band and just wants to hang out with his friends. Well actually, they’re all under 21, so no worries Jordi.
  3. Here’s a picture of San Cisco drummer Scarlett Stevens thuggin. “WHAT IS LOVE, BABY DON’T HURT ME!”

Jessie Ware @ Petrillo Stage @ 3:15 PM

  1. Listen to “Wildest Moments”
  2. Here’s Jessie on her mom pushing her to wear her hair down… “I love my mum to pieces, but she always wants me to look like I’m going to a Bat Mitzvah.:
  3. You can catch Jessie Ware performing at ck one Music Lounge at the annual BMF Media Pre-Lolla party at the Hard Rock Hotel. Comment for details on how to score an invite! Here’s a link to last year’s event recap.

Disclosure @ The Grove Stage @ 6 PM

  1. Listen to “White Noise”
  2. Arguably the album of the year, Settle, reached number 1 on the UK Album charts. That means everything because the UK is really kicking ass in music right now.
  3. The brother duo rule social media. Follow them on Instagram here, like them on Facebook here, or go to their website. They provide a great behind the scenes look into their careers, and they insist on updating everything themselves (Yeah, we live in a time where that is actually shocking).

Ben Howard @ Red Bull Sound Select Stage @ 2:15 PM

  1. Listen to “Only Love”
  2. The Brit obsession just indeed continue into Saturday… where Ben should provide a mellow start to the day. I encourage you to listen to every single one of his albums and songs, I was a bit late to the party (only discovered him this summer…) and don’t want it to happen to anyone else.
  3. This video of Kelly Slater features a Ben Howard song. It also features really nice weather, if you forgot what that was like.

HAIM @ The Grove Stage @ 3:30 PM

  1. Listen to “The Wire” (Unfortunately has nothing to do with the show)
  2. It’s pronounced HAI-UHM. Not Hayme.
  3. The sister trio used to be really into Britney Spears (I mean who wasn’t). Check out a dance here, and stay for the rest of the video, as Alana, Este, and Danielle are a pretty damn good interview.

FOALS @ Petrillo Stage @ 5:45 PM

  1. Listen to “My Number” (Nothing like the Mike Jones “Back Then” song)
  3. Foal’s frontman Yannis Philippakis is really into Air Jordan’s, likes Frank Ocean and A$AP Rocky’s style, and teaches you how to make a proper Whisky Sour below.

Angel Haze @ Perry’s Stage @ 2 PM

  1. Listen to “New York”
  2. Download Haze’s mixtape Classick right here, for FREE
  3. Angel Haze and Azealia Banks had a little twitter beef, that was actually pretty hilarious. Here’s a little preview… if you’re interested in the rest, here’s a wrap up.

MS MR @ The Grove Stage @ 3:30 PM

  1. Listen to “Fantasy”
  2. If you want to catch MS MR (Pronounced Miss Mister if you’ve been trying to figure it out) in a more intimate setting, they’ll be performing Sunday night at the #ASOSRocks VIP Hard Rock After Party.
  3. Check out Lizzy Plapinger as a smurf?/Marge Simpson? in the video for “Hurricane.”

If it’s not too late – can you add me (+1) to the BMF List for Thursday-Sunday? Although, I am grateful for any of the days. Last year was so much fun I want to do it again 🙂

If it’s not too late, I’d like to get on the BMF List (+1) for Thursday through Sunday. Last year was a blast and am looking forward to discovering some great new music and of course get some nice swag 🙂
