Friday, December 7th, turntable mastermind and electronic music pioneer DJ Shadow hits MAYHEM at the MID! Resident DJ Zebo warms up the room along with DJ Intel and Moppy. Don’t miss a legend making a stop in Chicago!
DJ Shadow is regarded as one of the most influential and innovative artists to emerge from music in the last 20 years. Josh Davis, aka DJ Shadow, changed the game in 1996 with the release of his debut album, Endtroducing…, which was made entirely from samples. Endtroducing… back then served as a cutting-edge genre of instrumental hip-hop and dance music with a symphonic sweep built from samples dug out of the most obscure recordings. It was so influential that even TIME Magazine named it as one of the top 100 albums since 1954!
Two years later, Shadow followed up by creating a share of the music on the 1998 U.N.K.L.E. album, Psyence Fiction, an album that featured Thom Yorke of Radiohead, Richard Ashcroft of the Verve and Mike D. of the Beastie Boys, among many others. In 2006, his long awaited album The Outsider featured Bay Area Hyphy rappers including Keak Da Sneak and E-40. The album also featured a single with Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest, which led to Shadow’s first appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman. Shadow’s website launched in August 2009, and in the same year he became involved with DJ Hero, an Activision video game that features the mastermind himself as a playable character.
In September, Shadow released four collections of his finest recordings drawn from his 20-year career. Reconstructed: The Best Of DJ Shadow was released on one single CD and double vinyl, while Reconstructed: The Definitive DJ Shadow was issued as a multi-disc box set. Limited to 500 copies worldwide, each set is individually signed by DJ Shadow and includes eight discs. One of the highlights of the album is its inclusion of the pop masterpiece “Listen” featuring legendary vocalist Terry Reid.
